Celebrating Business Excellence Awards Banquet

The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual banquet on August 26th to honor the recipients of the Top 20 Under 40 and Top Small Business awards. The event was catered by Macaroni Joes and Party Stop, Inc. provided complementary wine for guests.

Lone Star Ballet Summer Intensive

On July 24th, the Lone Star Dance Academy hosted its Summer Intensive 2010 Performance in the Park. The Lone Star Ballet provided a family cook-out as the community watched the academy’s end-of-summer performances. A cool-down from the rain added to an evening of pure entertainment.

WOWW Wine Tasting

The first annual pow’ WOWW wine tasting was held at the Galleries at Sunset Center on July 22nd. The Window on a Wider World organization (WOWW) is an educational program, part of the Amarillo Globe News Center that works with Panhandle students to broaden their arts, sciences and cultural experiences. Guests enjoyed an art-filled evening of wines and hors d’ oeuvres from Macaroni Joes while supporting Panhandle education.

Ragin' Cajun Golf Tournament

On July 24th Palo Duro Creek Golf Club held its first annual Ragin’ Cajun Classic Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the four-person scramble benefitted the local branch of Special Olympics Texas. The event included a gumbo and catfish dinner, an all-day putting contest and prizes that were awarded throughout the day.

Harley Party

On July 31st, Family Support Services sponsored their 16th annual Harley Party fundraising event. Proceeds from this event benefitted families and individuals throughout the Panhandle area. The community enjoyed a food-filled, entertaining evening downtown including live music from Three Ring Circus and the Buster Bledsoe Band, a drawing held for a limited-edition Harley Davidson motorcycle and their signature pork fajitas.

The Sweet Science of Chocolate

On July 30th the Don Harrington Discovery Center hosted its second Discover after Dark event. “The Sweet Science of Chocolate featured Schokolad’s DeRima Johnson who gave the community a closer look into the process of making chocolate, from its history to its first stage of life as a bean. This tasty evening included live music, entertainment, chocolate fondue, chocolate cocktails and wine.

Red, White and Zoo

The Amarillo Zoo celebrated the Fourth of July weekend with a scavenger hunt, horseshoes, a hula-hoop contest, and activities such as pie-eating contests and a hot dog buffet. Onlookers cheered on Solomon the lion as he attempted to break the 72 oz. Big Texan steak record.

High Noon on the Square

The 16th season of High Noon on the Square, a summer weekly entertainment series, continued on June 30th. Guests enjoyed a free musical performance on the Potter County Courthouse lawn by Yvonne Perea and an optional lunch catered by Schlotzsky’s. Proceeds from the event benefit Amarillo’s Center City.

Hosted by Amarillo College, the 14th annual June Jazz concert series continued on June 22nd. The five-week, free concert series was held in the Pit Amphitheater at Amarillo College’s Washington Street Campus. Guests were entertained by that evening’s musicians, Polk Street Jazz.

The Amarillo Botanical Gardens held its weekly summer Music in the Gardens event on June 24th. Guests listened to the vocal talents of the gospel music group, Sisters Under the Anointing. Music in the Gardens will run every Thursday through August.
