Centennial Gala

The Centennial Gala on February 13th brought together many people from the West Texas A&M family as they celebrated 100 years of achievements as an educational institution. The event was held at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. It was a time for alumni, faculty, students and the community to commemorate WT. Guests enjoyed dancing to live jazz from the band Pizazz. Dr. J. Patrick O’Brien, University president, and Dr. Charles Townsend, professor emeritus of history spoke at the event.

Man and Woman of the Year

Approximately 500 people filled the Amarillo Civic Center's Heritage Room on January 27th, to honor the 2009 Globe-News Man and Woman of the year. Receiving the honor were Gary Pitner and Lilia Escajeda, who were awarded for their numerous involvements in the community and contributions to Amarillo. Also America Supports You Texas, an organization that supports military men and women in the community, and Paul Matney, the President of Amarillo College, were recognized as Headliners of the Year.

2010 Symphony Ball

On February 6th, the Amarillo Symphony hosted its annual ball in the Heritage Ball Room at the Amarillo Civic Center. Guests were dressed in vivid colors as they celebrated the lavish theme, Carnaval Rio de Janeiro. The Symphony Ball honored the Symphony's Belles and Beaux, a group of high school seniors who served as ushers during the symphony's season. The evening consisted of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a Brazilian dinner catered by The Ambassador Hotel along with a samba, stilt walkers, professional dancers, roulette and other casino games. Proceeds from the ball benefit the Amarillo Symphony and its main educational programs.

Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Banquet

The Chamber’s annual banquet was held January 21st at the Civic Center to reflect back on the previous year’s activities. The event also provided the opportunity for networking with businesses and members of the community. Attendees listened to motivational speaker and corporate trainer, Pat Johns. The Chamber has been stimulating the improvement and expansion of Amarillo as well as the celebration of business excellence since 1926.

Power of the Purse Luncheon

Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health and the Community Connections Advisory Board of Amarillo hosted The Power of the Purse Luncheon and Designer Purse Auction on February 5th in the Civic Center Grand Plaza. All proceeds benefit the new InfantRisk Center in Amarillo. The center will be the first of its kind and will provide mothers with the free resources they need to seek medical advice for their infants. Guest speaker Jenna Bush Hager thanked and congratulated the people of the Panhandle for their accomplishment.

Children's Learning Center Poinsettia Luncheon

The Children’s Learning Center of Amarillo held its annual poinsettia luncheon on December 10th at the Amarillo Civic Center Grand Plaza. Funds raised from the luncheon help the center improve each of their facilities around Amarillo. This year, they celebrated the opening of their newest center, The Curtis Flemming Center, located at First Christian Church. Guests were entertained by Chuck Alexander, accompanied by the children who attend the CLC. Members of the Palo Duro Choir sang a few traditional Christmas songs as well.

The Bridge 20th Anniversary Celebration

The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center hosted a 20th Anniversary Celebration on December 10th at their facility. The Bridge offers victims of child abuse a comforting place to tell their stories and start the healing process. The Bridge sees about 1800 clients every year, and 86 percent of the children that come to the Bridge are victims of sexual assault. Of that percentage, 87 percent have been abused by a parent.

The 27th Annual Bridal Show was held January 10th at the Civic Center and remains the largest bridal and wedding exhibition in the Panhandle. More than 1500 people, 500 of them brides-to-be, attended the show to get planning ideas from 100 vendors and area merchants. Proceeds from the show benefitted The High Plains Marriage and Family Coalition.

N.E.D is a band made up of six gynecologic oncology surgeons from around the country whose concerts raise money to support cancer research. Dr. William “Rusty” Robinson, who plays bass and harmonica, is a physician in the Department of OB/GYN at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. N.E.D. performed at the Globe-News Center for Performing Arts on January 17. All proceeds from the concert benefitted the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation and Princess Warriors.

The Nutcracker Ball

The Lone Star Ballet Guild held its annual Nutcracker Ball on November 21st at the Amarillo Civic Center. The event was catered by the Ambassador and guests enjoyed live entertainment from the band Insufficient Funds. The ball is the Guild’s major annual fundraiser which includes the presentation of the 2009 LSB ushers and usherettes, a raffle and a silent auction. The sponsor for this year’s event was Graham Brothers Jewelry.
