Holiday Glam

The holiday season – and its accompanying list of parties – is the perfect excuse to add a touch of glamor to your everyday makeup. “With the holidays, we have a lot of shimmer and glitter,” says makeup artist Kim Wood of amarillomakeup.com. “Metallics are really hot right now, too.”

We asked her to provide a few tips for using eye shadows and lipsticks with a hint of glitter and metallic hues. But don’t go overboard. One of these approaches is enough to put you – and your appearance – in the holiday spirit. “Keep it simple,” says Wood. “Just one or two features keep it more impactful and tasteful.”

Glitter Eyes
Adding glitter to eyes is on trend for the 2017 holiday season. “There are so many glitter eye shadows available. You can sweep a gold or silver glitter across the eyelid and pair it with a couple of coats of mascara or maybe some false lashes,” Wood says. “Throw on a warm lip and you’ve got something simple that really looks dressy and gorgeous for the holidays.”

Glitter Lips
For a more dramatic impact, many women use a lip kit that combines liquid lipstick with powdered glitter. “If you’re going to wear this glitter lip, I recommend pairing down the rest of the face,” Wood says. “You don’t want to look like a disco ball or a clown. With anything that has a lot of drama to it, let that one feature be your statement.”

Smoky Metallic Eyes
According to Wood, one of the best ways to glam up your holiday appearance is with a smoky metallic look.

Before applying any dark eye shadow, Wood suggests pairing a fluffy blending brush with a medium-warm brown that’s a few shades darker than your skin tone. Apply that warm brown first. “Blend this into the crease of the eye,” she says. “This really makes blending with darker colors easier. It’s got a softer, warmer look and is less harsh than if you were to try to blend a darker smoky color out into the crease. That’s going to make all the difference.”

The next step is to use a liner, blending out the edges.

Once the base is ready, it’s time for a pop of metallic. Use your fingertip to pat the rich color in the center of the eye.

Jewel Tones
“I’m also seeing a lot of eye shadow palettes with gorgeous teal,” Wood says. “I think a teal eye shadow is very striking – a solid teal lid with brown blended into the crease to soften the edges, paired with a darker lip.” Wood admits most experts won’t recommend pairing bold eyes with a bold lip color, but “when you pair those together for the holidays I think it’s allowed,” she laughs.

Highlights
Not adventurous enough to experiment with smoky eyes or glittery lips? Wood has a more subtle suggestion: “Add shimmer to your décolletage or your shoulders,” she says. “I’ve been seeing a lot of highlighting on the cheekbone area, which is beautiful.”

However, she warns women with lined or textured skin to go easy on frost highlights. “It has a tendency to accentuate pores and fine lines. For more mature women who don’t want to accentuate lines around the eyes or cheekbones, you can do a loose glitter shimmer instead.”

For women with pale skin, she recommends silver tones. “Rose gold and copper are great for medium-toned skin, and gold for deeper tones,” she says.
